Making Dollars and Sense out of UX ROI

August 3rd, 2010, 0 Comment(s)

Welcome to reality.

Business Guy: Hey there Designer, build me a cool website that makes me lots of money!
UX Designer Person: Cool … Maybe we should do some user experience (UX) planning first.
Business Guy: What’s that?
UX Designer Person: We do a lot of research and planning to make sure that users attain their goals while your website does its job for your business.
Business Guy: How much does that cost?

Yeah, you’ve been there, haven’t you? In that meeting – trying to explain the importance of UX to someone only seeing dollar signs. Not sure what graph or chart to show next to try and convince them?

Ever thought that maybe you should show them dollar signs? It’s what they want, isn’t it?

But how? Quantifying UX into potential monetary figures may sound like a slippery task. How can you show the true value of UX in dollars and sense? Maybe it’s easier than you think.

Linking Usability and Experience Design

Being able to balance the perfect usability architecture and the most beautiful user experience design is sometimes easier said than done. An architect can design a house, but three different builders can use different quality materials to make the overall structures pale in comparison, even though they used the same blueprints. Only one — or possibly none — of the houses may actually meet what the home owner really wants. But that is also the beauty of design creativity. If you ask three designers to make you a rabbit, you may get one ceramic teapot, one oil painting and one origami Volkswagen Rabbit.

Communication is key. It can be done in a variety of ways, but also has to be tailored from the norm to open up the possibilities for a creative mind to have the latitude to explore the potential artistry of the interface. Some are standard, some new and some forgotten, the following methods are all ways to pull the two together.

Our Five Favorite Lines of SQL

Whenever we’re doing any WordPress development, we eventually have the need to sync the data between the current development server, possibly a staging server, and a live server. What’s the easiest way to move a WordPress database between two servers?

Let’s start this example by saying that we have two servers: Dev and Live. Each server has a mostly identical WordPress installation and each server has it’s own database. In order to sync the initial database from Dev to Live, the following steps may be used:

Breaking out of the 4:3 box

One of the things I love about video on the web is the internet is no longer just a delivery method. What I mean by that is video doesn’t have to be an after thought when designing a web site. And I don’t mean deciding where to place a video player on the page. The thing is, websites don’t confine you to the traditional 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios. If you’re shooting for broadcast or
DVD you might have to arrange parts of your scene to fit within the frame, but with a web piece you can build the frame to fit your scene. With the help of a green screen you’re able to approach a video project in a completely new way, one that promotes fresh thinking and creativity.

Recently I came across a site by Quicksilver (thanks to Motionographer for posting) that is a great example of what can be done when web and video are married together. The site features Quicksilver sponsored skateboarders who actually break out of the video player and turn elements
of the web design into skateboard ramps. You can see it here.

All of this brings up a great question. Where video producers may have asked “how will the audience view this video?” we might want to consider “how will the viewer interact with the video?
